Mezzanine Floor Staircases
Invicta have many years experience in designing appropriate staircases for each mezzanine floor installed, and we will happily advise on meeting the required Building Regulations. All mezzanine floor staircases must comply with Approved Document K.
Part K
- Stairs, ramps and ladders shall provide safety for people, whem moving between different levels of a building
- Stairs, ramps, floors and balconies shall be adequately guarded
- Safety shall be provided for people using vehicle ramps and loading bays
In order to comply with Part K, each staircase should have:
- Open step risers at a maximum of 190mm
- A minimum step tread width no less than 900mm
- 400mm clearence between landings and door swings
- 250mm going of each step
Additionally, legislations recently introduced require at least one Ambulant Disabled Staircase that complies with Approved Document M of the Building Regulations shoud be fitted to mezzanine floors used for storage. A lift should be provided for office use mezzanine floors.
Part M
- Reasonable provision shall be made for people with disabilities at entrances to and within new dwellings and buildings
In order to comply with Part M, each staircase should have:
- A maximum of twelve treads between flights
- Infill step risers at a maximum of 170mm
- A minimum step tread width no less than 1200mm
- 1200mm clearence between landings and door swings
- Handrails extending 300mm past the bottom and top treads
- 250mm going of each step
- Distinguishable step nosing
